PROBLEM ANALYSIS
<<ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Due to a lack of knowledge and facilities, the residents of Oloonkolin make little or no use of opportunities to develop themselves economically. That development is important to improve living conditions and thus to support the other pillars of our project.

Objective

We envisage equipping residents to earn a sufficient income to provide for the basic needs of their family (food, education for their children, accommodation, clean drinking water and health care) independently.

Interventions

The establishment of a training centre where a number of participating families from Oloonkolin use model gardens to learn how to prepare the soil, how to sow, and how to maintain and harvest crops.

  • The families are also taught how to market their products. By working in the model gardens, the families learn to apply modern agricultural methods and understand the value of increased production. The families share the knowledge they acquire with their neighbours so the whole community can benefit.
  • Education in modern techniques of livestock farming to increase productivity.
  • The acquisition of a tractor to prepare the ground for farming and to transport the harvest to sell it. In addition, the tractor can be hired out to Oloonkolin residents to work the land. The income this generates can be used to maintain the tractor, support the costs of agricultural production and maintain the water tank.
  • Provision of microcredit to families with a sound business plan so they can start a business to generate an (increased) income.
  • The promotion of business relationships between lodge owners in the Maasai Mara Park and farmers and shopkeepers in Oloonkolin.
  • The provision of biogas installations and training in how to use them. The gas will be used for both household and business consumption.
  • Teaching residents to use compost from the Ecosan toilets for agriculture and horticulture.
  • Planting of bamboo to counter the erosion of fertile soil and to provide fibre-rich building materials to build houses, amongst others.
